What is Canna Companion™?
Canna Companion is a unique blend of Cannabis sativa strains, frequently referred to as hemp, designed to enhance the supportive benefits of the Cannabis plant while minimizing the ‘high-inducing’ concentrations of THC. Each capsule contains a combination of phytocannabinoids, the main group of compounds in hemp, terpenes which help to modulate phytocannabinoids, and flavonoids, which are found in a wide variety of foods we and our pets eat. In addition, hemp contains omega 3 & 6 fatty acids and vitamin B6, helping to provide a holistic approach to your pet's health needs.
We pride ourselves on making a Cannabis product that is developed, manufactured and sent to you by veterinarians. As veterinarians, we are committed to continued research and development in order to ensure our product meets the needs of your pet.
Canna Companion is made in WA State; we only use vegetarian capsules, and ensure all of our packaging is made from recycled materials and is in turn fully recyclable. This even includes the plastic bags, labels, and business cards. Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!
There’s a lot of confusion regarding what defines various cannabis plants. We hear the terms ‘marijuana’ and ‘hemp’ tossed about in advertising and the media but getting to the bottom of what they mean can be tricky. Add in conflicting definition preferences of horticulturists, cannabis enthusiasts, federal and state governmental agencies, and it’s a dizzying experience. Here’s a quick guide that cuts through the tape and provides a baseline reference for all things cannabis.
||C. indica*||C. ruderalis*|
|CBD %||THC %||Uses|
|Marijuana||Medical variety||Moderate to high||Low to moderate||Many reported uses exist. Medical Jane has a lot of good information.|
|Recreational variety||Low to moderate||Moderate to high||The purpose is for adults to have a good time, but for variety and even wine pairings, check out Leafly.|
|Hemp||Oil seed variety||Low to moderate||Low||Cosmetics, food (seed & oil), medicine (historically), non-toxic diesel fuel and varnish, and much more.|
|Fiber variety||Low||Low||Rope, clothing, baskets, cars, building materials, paper, etc. The list goes on and on.|
*These are considered types of marijuana and we only mention them in passing. Our focus is on C. sativa; the details above apply to C. sativa strains only.
Now that you have a reference point, why did Canna Companion choose hemp for our supplement? The answer is two-fold: it’s legal and the phytocannabinoid and terpenoid profiles work perfectly for pets. Due in part to their small body size, dogs and cats can take advantage of small amounts of CBD, THC and other cannabinoids found in hemp and can therefore reap the benefits of this great plant. In addition, they respond to the relatively small or even trace amounts of omega fatty acids, B vitamins and various minerals naturally found in hemp. Perhaps most importantly, when one utilizes the entire cannabis plant, as opposed to individual components, an increase in health benefits and decrease in adverse effects is observed. Some of the adverse effects possible in dogs and cats taking CBD only products, particularly those designed for human consumption, are extreme sedation or nausea.
How can Canna Companion™ benefit pets?
Hemp naturally contains compounds which affect the endocannabinoid system, an internal pathway found in mammals. Nearly every tissue contains receptors which respond to the components found in Cannabis, acting separately but holistically with the body’s other receptor systems. Once triggered, these receptors activate a variety of chemical reactions aimed at supporting the body's natural stress response mechanisms.
Please note that while Canna Companion will likely benefit your pet, it is not designed to be a magic bullet, but rather should be part of a comprehensive care program. It works best when administered under the direction of a veterinarian as part of a total health care regimen. Please keep in mind to never change prescribed medication doses or frequency of administration without the explicit advice from your attending veterinarian. Hemp has no known negative interactions with other medications or supplements. Lastly, please note that due to the decades long prohibition on cannabis, there are no double blinded studies on how cannabis products can help dogs and cats. For the few studies that are out there, please contact us, and we will be happy to provide links to published research publicly available on the internet.
Here’s how Canna Companion™ may benefit your dog or cat:
- May help joint discomfort associated with normal daily exercise and activity
- Encourages a normal calm demeanor
- Supports a healthy GI tract
- Assist in "end of life" care and comfort
- Maintains healthy neurological function
- Helps support the immune system
Canna Companion ideally should be administered on a full stomach as this helps ensure the highest rate of absorption from the GI tract. Generally, cats need one capsule per day while dogs need a capsule twice daily. Most pets show a response within a week, but it can take up to two weeks for optimum response. There are some common conditions and typical response times. Please note individual variation is expected and your dog or cat may respond in a short or longer time frame.
|Condition||Administration Recommendations||Response Time|
|Age-related Joint Discomfort||Mild: once daily||10-14 days|
|Moderate: once or twice daily||10-14 days|
|Severe: twice daily||2-3 weeks|
|Neurological Health||Once daily (cats)||Variable|
|Twice daily (dogs)||3-4 weeks|
|Immune Support||Once daily (cats)||4-6 weeks|
Twice daily (dogs)
|Calm Demeanor||Once daily (cats)||6-8 weeks|
|Twice daily (dogs)|

Is Canna Companion™ legal?
Yes. Because Canna Companion contains naturally occurring non-psychoactive levels of THC (tested by a local non-affiliated company for quality assurance), is made from hemp, and is not intended for human consumption, it meets the current definition of hemp supplements under Unites States federal law.
- The most common side effect is mild lethargy (due to CBD effects on the brain) which usually subsides in 3-4 days.
- A less common side effect is softer stools and an increased bowel movement frequency (due to individual fiber sensitivities). Remember, we use the whole plant, and hemp is known for its high fiber content. A less frequent administration resolves the fiber sensitivity issue.
- Rarely vomiting or increased skin sensitivity are seen, necessitating discontinuation of Cannabis-based products.

A brief description of the science behind Canna Companion™:
Canna Companion is the result of 15 years of research into the endocannabinoid (EC) system and the interaction of phytocannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids within that system. We utilized the research from multiple disciplines in order to determine how these compounds can positively affect mammalian physiology. Scientific principles of veterinary medicine and pharmacology, plus the multidisciplinary research and our own testing and informal clinical trials, helped us develop and refine Canna Companion, making it a part of your dog and cat’s holistic care.
